... that is the question! It seemed I wasn't the only one who hadn't heard of these until Laurie educated me so I looked through my collection of bird figurines. Be sure to pay her visit because she is celebrating her 1000th blog post with a give away.
The one on the bottom right is the one I bought the other day and you can see how much more sense it makes for matches than for flowers. My friend Carol gifted me with the one on the left several years ago. The angle of the opening never made sense until I tried it with "spill". Perfect!
These short ones seem a little too tall for matches and a little too short for flowers and a little too new for spill. Hmm.. I did some more research and came up with some images here.
I also found articles here and here. Clearly, spill vases were not all bird figurines. I also have a little cornucopia that probably qualifies, too.The jury is still out on the two short ones pictured so please feel free to weigh in and please let me know if you find another resource for information.

I wish I could help out here. Does it help to say that they're so darn cute no matter what they are?
The yellow birds are so pretty. Honestly, they all just make me think of tooth pick holders. I agree with Betsy that they are just cute no matter what!
Hmmm, what a mystery! I do agree that the best use may be for toothpicks.....they're all just darling!
Have you done a post on how you display all of your figurines?
Now I have to go look at my bird collection!
well you learn something new everyday. never knew this! TFS! and "merci" for stopping in on my Grey dey. (BTW...i adore the silvery grey eggs as well!) Happy w-end! ;)
I always thought they were little planters (the ones with the short round containers).
I agree, those little spill containers are too cute!!!
Now I am confused. I can understand the ones at an angle are spills, but some of the pictures in your reference look like flower frogs.....like flower frogs I have in my collection. The holes are upright as if to hold a flower stem and the bottom lets the stem get to water.. I guess I better go take a look!!!
Hm.... they are darling and cute though!! :) xo Holly

birds are always very cute but OMG I can't start another collection LOL
These are so dang cute!!!!
What an awesome collection.
Ooh, you're finding lots of links! I love the whole idea of spill vases...sort of like string holders, a real "waste not/want not" mentality and I love it!
I have a small bird vase thingy that I always thought was for toothpicks.. but now that I see this, maybe not!
