They were black right from the start so we didn't know how to tell when they were ripe other than to pick one and bite it. We eventually figured out that the slightly green bottom turns pink when they are ready. They look just like plums and they are yummy, indeed.
We also have traditional tomatoes that are coming on strong now. We have been eating something from the garden nearly every day since the start. First was lettuce and radishes then the peas, beans and summer squash. Now we are starting to harvest the root crops like turnips, rutabagas and beets. Late summer bounty!
Friday UPDATE! Lunch at my desk today - SO good!

I don't think I have ever even seen those before. Our tomatoes are going strong as well.
!! Love these -- based soley on their appearance, that is but I imagine they're a stunning addition to salads, etc as there is very little black food I can think of.
Besides licorice.
How cool ! I have never heard of black tomatoes.
Oh, I can't wait to plant a vegetable garden.
As old as I am LOL I have never heard of a black tomato LOL how interesting next spring i'm going to see if I can find one to plant
I left you ca comment on my post about my bakelite buttons and didn't buy them as an investment but I sure like playing with them so guess i'll use the E6000 glue on the necklace
I've never seen those either! Like a black cherry! Glad they are yummy and wouldn't mind if they tasted like licorice!
There's nothing like a home grown tomato. I've never heard of black tomatoes, but I'm sure they're delicious!
I think these are so cool. It's fun to try something new and I imagine they dress up a salad and give it a new twist.
Be sure and save some seed, you may never see these again :)
Have a lovely weekend.
Your blogging sister, Connie :)
I have those same tomatoes in my garden this year! They are delicious so I need to save some seeds.
I've heard the black tomatoes are delicious. We looked for plants this year but everyone was sold out. One of the nurseries said they are the first to go. Lunch looks yummy!
I have never seen black tomatoes - how interesting! I think they would really make a dish look beautiful.
